I have used this book in its various print editions (7th Ed. right now) since the late 90's both before and after I worked for PDI (PDI's consultants are the brains behind the book).I work in global leadership development function where I provide it as a learning resource for our executives. I have used this resource in my other roles and in tasks as diverse as executive coaching, building competency models, running development centers, as a consulting psychologist writing development and career guidance reports for executives, when looking for ideas for my own development, and when working with people to help build their individual development plans. In short, a very wide range of contexts.The common thread for my use of this book has been for development of managers and executives or coachees against a specific a targeted behavior. Its an ideal source of ideas and content.The competency model in the front pages (the wheel ion p. xvi) is fairly thorough and workable, with transparent terms. The contents page ios organized along these competencies, and get down to real behaviors. This model been around and stood the test of time after much validation in the field. If you follow the school of thought that most models are 80% the same, this should be a solid one to look at, and it's not dumbed-down too much to become meaningless like some have.The SMH also uses language that is acceptable to a wide audience (unlike the quirky pseudo-American jargon sometimes found in Lominger/KF products).(( If working with ultra senior execs in global roles, I suggest you look at the Successful Execs Handbooks instead - note is uses a different executive success profile' or wheel - so do browe the contents page to see what suits your needs...))Its longevity as a text used widely and enthusiastically by HR professionals and consultants (and indeed its eponymous target audience) is the direct result of 2 things:1. Usability and usefulness and availability. Its just a great resource I see a lot of professionals shelves (and they will tell you they use it) - you don't need to be ina some client club to buy it either2. It accompanies the PDI 360° tool called Profilor - its rare to find a decent 360° tool that is paired with a good development guide / resource like this. The way they link up is your lowest rated competencies in your 360° report list page numbers. Turn to that page in the current edition, and there you have it, a chapter on development tips for the behavior you may need to focus on.So in to sum up, a very solid and sensible book which is rigorous and thorough while being ready to use - dive into any page and be impressed.Its only drawback is it's a bit heavy and people keep not returning my copy, I keep coming back here to get another copy.Fortunately, its cheap on amazon. Cheaper than from PDI...
