My friends are always trying to get me to read books on post war apocalypse and I just never could get into them. After months of my friend wearing me down about how great the Hell Divers series of books are, I decided to give it a go and ordered the kindle/audible version. I was just not prepared for the mind blowing journey that Nicholas Sansbury Smith takes us on with Hell Divers 1 and 2. The story is gripping and does not let go of you. It wont let you put the book down to eat or sleep, and keeps you on the edge of wondering how Commander Xavier (X) or the other hell divers are going to get themselves out of the bad situation they find themselves in, only to get put into a worse situation.The premise of the book series is that humanity has all but gone extinct and the earth is no longer livable. A few thousand of what is left of humanity live on huge old decapitated airships that require constant repair to stay aloft. The hell divers are brave souls who risk their lives to dive from the ship to earth to retrieve parts that the ship needs or to make life tolerable for the inhabitants of the airships. Just getting from the airship to the ground is a howling and dangerous ride and in some cases half of the hell divers don't make it due to lightning storms.The clock starts ticking once the hell divers get to the ground as their suits will only protect them for so long from deadly radiation. Worse than the radiation are the creatures that lurk in dark places attracted to the power cells which provide the hell divers suits with warmth and protection from the radiation.Are you hooked yet? The ride the author has in store for you with this series is more than worth more the price of admission. Your gonna love the Hell Divers series. As of the time of writing this review, Hell Divers 3 is just a week away from release. Man oh man, I just cannot wait.
This book is quite. the. ride. From being on board the airship, to being "back" on earth, or anywhere in between, I couldn't read fast enough to enjoy and get to the next page. The writing is so vivid, I could see the action unfold in my mind's eye, and I'm sure that my pulse started racing during some of the passages - especially when I kept thinking to the current state of geo-political relationships in the world, and how close we might be to living in the world within the pages.Between the storyline, the characters, the writing, the tension and adrenaline rides, I am seriously astounded that this book, and the entire "Hell Divers" series hasn't gained the attention or popularity of "The Hunger Games" back during its release - or that it hasn't been turned into a movie/series yet.
I didn't know what to think when I got this first book in the Hell Divers Series. But I am SO glad I tried it. From the first chapter I was hooked. I couldn't get the pages in my head fast enough. I was deeply invested in the characters. Nicholas Sansbury Smith writes some of the best characters. The entire concept of the book - the last of humanity living, trapped, on huge airships hundreds of years after the earth was left inhabitable by war. The powerful imagery of the Hell Divers risking everything to leap out into the hell on earth to keep the airship and it's residents alive. I found myself shouting along with the team - WE DIVE so the HIVE SURVIVES! What a gift that there are four in the series and more coming!
There are only two left in the world. Large flying war machines that are part helium airship and, hover craft with the ability to fly and they are powered with nuclear power packs. They are hundreds of years old and they survived through the efforts of the hell divers. The brave men and women that are shot out of the craft to dive down to the war torn and demolished Earth to find the parts necessary to repair the craft and keep them flying.The two craft contain all of the remaining living human beings on earth. One of the ships is catastrophically damaged by a storm and the hell divers they send down are all dead but one. They are killed by falling through the massive storms or from being attacked by the mutant monsters that roam the earth and fly in the sky. The aircraft named “The Hive†gets the distress call and rushes to try to help rescue their sister craft. Can they arrive in time to save half the human race or will they meet with disaster also……I am a huge fan of the author Nicholas Smith. I have read all of his series of books of the Extinction series and enjoyed them all. This book, Hell Divers, is the first book of a new series. It is about a post apocalyptic world where life is rough and barely surviving is a daily challenge. Hell Divers as the bravest of the brave and their life expectancy is only about 15 dives. Horrible electrical storms, nuclear winter, radiation and mutant killers combine to take their toll on the Hell Divers.The author has the skill to take you 250 years into the future and show you what life would be like after mankind has destroyed themselves and their planet. He also builds strong characters that you like and want to survive. This is a good book and it is full of action and suspense. I rated it 5 stars. I am already hooked on this new series and I am waiting for the next book to be released.The next book in the series is released and it is an excellent book also. Great series to read and enjoy! The books are full of action and I like reading them a lot. This author is becoming one of my favorites. His books are entertaining and I just enjoy reading them! Hell Divers II is released and it is a very good story, Hell Divers III will be released soon and I believe this series of stories is getting better with each new book release. This series is well worth reading.This is the first book of the series and it is a must read to lay the ground work for the story of how the apocalypse came about and the dire situation that humanity is in.This book is well written and it paints a picture of an Earth devastated by nuclear war with very few human survivors left! It also leaves the world a nuclear wasteland inhabited by mutant creatures and plants that hunt the few living people on the surface of the earth.The imagination of Nicholas Sansbury Smith is what makes this series of stories interesting and exciting. This part of a great series and it is a good story. I have heard that it may be made into a movie or a TV series.A great book that holds your interest and keeps you reading the book as you can’t stop!
